Carmela Asero is a strategic and lateral thinker with more than 15 years’ experience in the area of research infrastructures, open science and EU digital single market policies and programmes. For EFIS, she has managed the EOSC Enhance project and contributed to the CatRIS project and to the European Research Data Landscape Study. For the European Commission’s DG RTD (2016-17), Carmela played a key role in shaping the European Open Science Cloud and in defining the implementing actions for EOSC governance. Previously, she was also a policy analyst for digital single market and space policy at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre. Carmela holds a unique set of skills in European research infrastructures and ICT policies and programmes.
Between 2008 and 2011, she was scientific project officer at DG Connect in the e-infrastructures unit where she managed many projects in different scientific domains. Carmela has been working in the area of policy, strategy and implementing activities in different EU projects on cloud computing (alongside organisations such as CERN, the Cloud Security Alliance, EMBL and the EGI Foundation), and in other ICT domains such as digital media and telecommunications.
She holds a BA Hons in economics, a MA in diplomatic studies and a MSc in e-business. She is fluent in Italian, English and French, a basic user in Spanish and is currently looking to improve her Japanese. Aside from her EFIS Centre activities, she is also involved in European projects focused on media, AI, cloud and 5G developments with the European Broadcasting Union.
